Epilogue
Chapter 12
Jimmy is almost out of prison and is both scared and excited about leaving. He begin to reconcile the events that happened in the prison and how the people he meet has changed including himself. From the poems he has created you can infer that he has grown intellectually and has become wiser then when he first entered prison. Leaving the prison Jimmy left his old habits, and began to create a new life. Jimmy finally accepts that his past doesn't control his future and that the only one who is able to change his future is himself.
Chapter 5
In the Epilogue Jimmy finally moves on with his life and sustains a inner calm. He begin to see things from a new perspective and forgives both himself and his family. He reconciles with his mother and finds out that his family had just as many problems he had when he was sent to prison. Sadly Jimmy's father, Meiyo, his mother and his ex passed away he doesn't let it rule his life. In the end Jimmy finally found himself and accepts past which lead him to a brighter future.

Chapter 5
In chapter five Jimmy is being prosecuted for the drug scandal and injuring an FBI agent. He tries to ask his sister to loan him money to afford a good attorney but she rejects him. He feels as though his sister has joined sides with his mother and didn't want anything to do with his life. While feeling alone and abandoned Jimmy finds out from a letter his fiance Lonnie has fallen in love with Carey, he's being blamed for being the leader of a drug cartel, and has to plea guilty himself so he wouldn't have to spend more time in prison which literally destroys his hope. Jimmy is sentenced to five to ten years in prison.
In chapter four Jimmy is selling drugs for Galvin which puts him into a life or death situation. In the chapter Jimmy run into many problems such as if he doesn't sell the drugs he could be killed, if he was caught by the police he would be sent to prison for a long time, and finally the constant phobias of being caught. In the chapter Jimmy becomes over worked, his attitude change towards Marcos and Lonnie. By the end of the chapters Jimmys worst fear became a reality when he was set up by Rick, and was prosecuted along with Carey for almost killing an FBI agent. With the law after him and no one to turn to he turned himself in.
Chapter 3
In chapter three Jimmy Santiago Baca is shown trying to escape his past and forge a new future. Although it starts out well he slowly begin to run into problems that take the form of past experiences which forces him to resign from his new endeavors. Most of the problems he runs into take the form of needing an education, not being able to make a commitment, and obtaining wealth. Jimmy also begins to use his friends Marcos and Lonnie as a crutch so he wouldn't have to face these problems which endangered both of them. By the end of the chapter Jimmy and Marcos become part of a drug smuggling cartel which nearly cost them there lives.
